Cash registers & sessions
A cash register records a shop's cash. Each shop has one, created automatically with it. A day's work involves two separate sessions:
| Session | What it tracks | Where to manage it |
|---|---|---|
| Point of sale session | One user's selling post | Point of Sale |
| Cash register session | The drawer: opening float, cash, final count | Finance → Treasury → Cash Registers |
The illustrated walkthrough of the day is in Opening and closing the till.
Open a session
Depending on the Auto-open sessions with the default float setting (System Settings → Global settings):
- on: the cash register session opens automatically, with the default float, as soon as a cash operation needs it, for example when the point of sale is opened;
- off: a person opens the session by entering the counted amount; without an open session, the cash operation is refused.
A manual opening is done from the register page, Open/Close Session button.
Cash movements
During the session, cash in and out movements unrelated to sales (float top-up, withdrawal, petty expense) are recorded with a reason. The register page groups them in the Movements tab. The Cash ↔ Bank Transfer button records a deposit at the bank.
Close a session
At the end of the shift, after closing the point of sale session:
- Open Finance → Treasury → Cash Registers, then the shop's register.
- Click Open/Close Session.
- Count the cash in the drawer and enter the Closing Amount. The dialog does not show the expected amount: counting is blind.
- Enter the Notes, which are required, then click Close Register.
The Z report downloads at closing. The Sessions tab keeps the opening amount, the closing amount and the declared difference of each session.
Close the register at the end of every shift. Differences spotted early are easier to explain, and your financial reports stay reliable.
Where to find registers
Registers and their tracking are in Finance → Treasury → Cash Registers, a screen reserved for administrators. The sale itself happens at the point of sale (POS).
